Lyn Slater, also known as Accidental Icon, is a social work professor turned prominent fashion blogger who doesn’t let age define her. Lyn became an ‘accidental’ style icon at 64, proving age is a mindset. Accidental Icon has amassed 750k followers on Instagram, and her popular blog by the same name focuses on topics close to her heart, including culture, art, fashion, wellness and human connection.
What’s your secret to longevity?
Accidental Icon: First and foremost, it’s my attitude and mindset. I have a positive perspective about what it means to be an older person – I’m always learning and doing something new. Second is focusing on maintaining good health. I eat a plant-based diet and exercise regularly. Trying not to be stressed is important too.
How did you become interested in cellular nutrition?
Accidental Icon: There’s so much research coming out now about the critical importance of diet and what you eat when it comes to health. As I dug deeper (to the cellular level), I found that my diet needed some support. Celltrient made it easy with simple questions that guided me to the products that work with my body and complement the healthy lifestyle that I live. I am currently using their Energy and Strength products.
I don’t believe in magic bullets when it comes to aging and that’s why Celltrient is right for me. It’s meant to renew and restore my cell’s natural processes and compliment the healthy lifestyle I’ve already been living.
What are some of the changes you’ve noticed as you’ve become older?
Accidental Icon: I’ve noticed a lower energy level and losing elasticity in my skin, but also many good changes. I live in and appreciate every moment more; I don’t care about pleasing others or what they might think, and I have more free time to do the things I love.
How do you practice self-care?
Accidental Icon: Eating well, doing yoga every day, keeping a journal, continuing some of my social work projects, spending time in nature and taking time with those I love.
What’s your favorite recipe when you’re in a need of a quick boost during the day?
Accidental Icon: Miso soup with barley and scallions.
What advice would you give to those in the second half of their life to help ensure it’s just as good, if not better than the first half?
Accidental Icon: First, accept the age you are and try to cultivate a positive mindset about aging. Research shows that if you have negative cognitions about being or getting old, you are at higher risk of cardiovascular death and can take 7 years off your lifespan.
Read the research about what you can do to keep your body and brain healthy, and implement the lifestyle changes that are recommended about what to eat, how to exercise, and exercises and activities that keep your brain active.
What are your favorite beauty secrets?
Accidental Icon: Drink lots of water, minimize exposure to blue light, use a good sunscreen, use clean makeup and beauty products, and pay attention to how you dress! Also, a good red lipstick.
Are there any dreams or passions you didn’t have the time or resources to chase when you were younger?
Accidental Icon: It’s never too late to start something new that’s completely different from what you did before. I was a social work professor who started a fashion blog when I was 61 not knowing anyone in fashion or having experience in that field. But many of the skills and knowledge I gained throughout my life applies, letting me make a great success out of it. So go for that passion!
